State of Mind

Mental health has been in the spotlight recently. From high profile athletes withdrawing from major sporting events to students behaving out of the norm in school, these incidents have led many to question the current mental state of society. Today’s young adults are often referred to as the snowflake generation, disintegrating under the slightest touch like their namesake.

Further exacerbating the situation, the pandemic has brought mental well-being to the forefront. It has thrown people into isolation and driven some to the brink as they were cut off from their friends, family and community. Humans are social creatures and depriving them of contact puts them into unfamiliar territory. All it takes then is a trigger event to spark a meltdown.

Keeping positive and staying connected is key to safeguarding our mental health. Being resilient also helps as we learn from failures and not treat them as setbacks in life. Talk to the people around you as it’s important to surround yourself with a supportive community rather than riding it out alone. And know that it’s never cowardly to call for a timeout but a sign of fortitude and courage.
