Rage is the most destructive of all emotions. By the time it manifests itself, it’s too late to tame the rage monster. There are signs that it’s rearing its ugly head from laboured breathing to an increased heart rate. They weren’t too off when they described anger as making the blood boil.
So recognise when anger is seething, then stop what you’re doing and take deep breaths. Or listen to some relaxing music. I find classical music the most effective for calming myself down whenever I feel the red mist setting in. If all else fails, take a break from what triggered frustration.
But venting has its positives too, rather than keeping it all in, as long as the manifestation doesn’t result in self-destruction or violence. Letting it out is a form of emotional release that can bring about longer term mental health benefits if done right.
