Sometime early last year after we shifted in for a while, we toyed with the idea of growing some greenery in our humble abode to give it a little more life. Back then, we had either cheap, plastic look-alike plants from Ikea or dried flowers from various special occasions as decor.
So after a visit to the 7-storey Far East Flora Centre at Clementi, we decided to adopt a tri-colour Dracaena thinking it would brighten up our living space. We were delighted with this purchase especially so because the dragon tree has been described as a particularly hardy plant known for its low maintenance.
How quickly were we proven wrong as the plant withered away in six months, shedding leaves faster than we could even figure out what went awry. We were crestfallen and swore that as long as we remained busy, working adults, we were never going to be successful plant parents.
Looking back, it was probably a combination of factors that led to its eventual death – lack of sunlight as it resided in a dark entryway, an inconsistent watering schedule and a likely spider mite infestation.
So after this harrowing experience, we were quite convinced that we just didn’t have green fingers and went back to the preserved variety, acquiring a nice bonsai from Slow Green, made of preserved moss requiring absolutely zero care. Perfect for our lifestyle.
One year on, how things have changed.
