Small is great

Watching Elizabethtown yesterday night was an epiphany of what life’s meant to be. No, I don’t care about the love story between protagonists Drew (Orlando Bloom) and Claire (Kirsten Durst) but the underlying community spirit of a small American town. As Drew travels back to his hometown to handle his father’s funeral service, the town rallies round him to share his grief, and showed him what a fantastic man his father was.

The idea of living in a small town where everybody knows everybody is tempting; children growing up together, and waitresses at the local bistro knowing everyone’s orders. In contrast, the big city life is uninviting; towering apartment blocks make it hard to know your neighbours, and cheery smiles are often met with blank stares in lifts and lobbies.

Building a metropolis entails losing a part of community spirit and attempts to revive this sense of belonging in today’s fast-paced and I-don’t-give-a-damn society are, at best, futile. Essentially, progression necessitates sacrifices. Urbanites choose to give up the value of the community for the high life. For me, I would choose to exchange the city for a small town. But for now, I guess I just have to make do, somehow.
