The Social Divide

[]

As the world becomes more interconnected with technology, we are ironically at risk of becoming more disconnected. A typical scene at the dining table today sees fingers furiously tapping and eyes intensely fixated on the glowing screens of our mobile devices. But technology has not just invaded the sanctity of the dinner table, it has made inroads into every aspect of our lives. On the move, by our bedside, we’re almost always just an arm’s length away from digital escapism.

The increasing pervasiveness of technology has resulted in an always connected society. Unfortunately, it has also created a generation of disinterested individuals sorely lacking in situational awareness. Glued to their mobile devices, this generation is seemingly more concerned with what’s happening on their screens than what’s happening around them. Mobile devices, while enabling greater connectivity and accessibility to information, have also inevitably redefine social norms.

While I’m a proponent of technology, I absolutely abhor the incessant use of it. Regrettably, there appears to be a dearth of social etiquette when it comes to its usage. It’s sad and laughable because in the physical company of people, rather than acknowledging their presence by being attentive, we often retreat into our digital enclaves. It’s deplorable that society have degraded to the level that we actually need campaigns to encourage reconnecting with the world around us.
