Best is only relative

How do you define the term ‘best’? It is an adjective used to describe something or someone that is better than all others. A subject matter can never be the best if there’s no basis of comparison. And such comparisons more often than not, leads to competition (healthy or not – it’s going to be debatable but definitely not the topic for discussion today).

It’s sad that people are often nearsighted. We are able to recognize and appreciate the work done by those who hold key appointments or in the limelight, but we can conveniently forget about the people who labour behind the scenes. Smaller their roles may be, we cannot do without them because they are the supportive infrastructure to our success.

For example, doctors are usually deemed as more prestigious and held in higher regard than nurses. But ask yourself these questions: Who brings your meals when you’re lying on the hospital bed? Who takes your temperature and monitor your vital statistics? Who helps you to the restroom in the middle of the night when you’re handicapped?

You’ll realize that they are both equally important and have to work hand-in-hand to ensure that everything is well taken care of. Similarly, behind every success story, there must always be a good Samaritan to pull you up when you fall on the way. There is only so much we can do by ourselves and that’s the way we’re made out to be. Like it or not, we’re socially interdependent on each other.

It is paradoxical that equality is an ideal state we wish to achieve, but yet we are so caught up with the societal rat-race in a bid to prove who is better than who. Why not put the time to better use and for a nobler cause by not just honouring the best, but also recognizing the efforts of the undervalued? A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. So, make every link your strongest.
