Good is never good enough

There’s a thin fine line between doing the right thing and overdoing it. Frankly speaking, humans are a greedy lot by nature, never contented with what they have and always wanting more. You may choose to disagree with the statement today, but people and things do change, and who knows that one day, you may find yourself nodding your head in agreement.

There’s always two sides to a story. You can ask any convict. We outsiders can only see what they want us to see. But under this facade, lies the truth, a motive, something the law seeks to uncover. Similarly, we often get misunderstood because we’re judged with insularity, but unfortunately, in some social order, there’s no one with a sane mind that dares to address our grievances.

People seldom see the full picture because they’re too obstinate to believe that theirs is a prejudiced perspective. They become so overly concerned with their own views and thinking they’re right that they refuse to accept other sides of the story. And even if they know that they’re wrong, they would refuse to admit their misjudgment because it will undermine their credibility.

Such parochialism exists in many people because they live in their own world. They’re unable to understand what other people are going through. They use their limited observations to make snap judgments of people, be it accurate or not. And being victims, we’re criticized and condemned to the gills. We can’t voice the injustice we’ve suffered because we don’t want to be seen as the anti-establishment.

However, we’re not afraid. We can revolt against the system, but what good does it do to us? So, we learn to live and tolerate with the unfairness. We swallow our pride because we know that from their narrow-minded viewpoint, they can never see the big picture.

Well-said! Just as the great Chinese thinker Xun Zi said, an establishment not based on the edifice of respect, justice and equality is a fledging one. Faced with the iniquities of life, we either choose to upset the order or accept our fates in servile hebetude. The former strives to exemplify the spontaneous retalitatory mentalility of the recalcitrant warrior, a courageous act some have performed to no avail. The contrary demands great patience and sometimes even humble subservience. Which route would you take? My choice: Let time decide…

  2. I would choose the latter because there’s no point in rebelling against the establishment since we’re going to leave. But I would support an uprising by the new blood if they choose to usher in a new revolution. I’m a patient man – I have waited for years and I shall not squander it away by upsetting the order in place and putting myself in a precarious position.
